Thank you, God, for putting me in Pulaar country instead of Wolof. Granted, you didn't give me the will/ability to really excel at either language, but despite myself I have managed to become sort of, not really, proficient in the former (I can do the greetings and fool someone for a good three minutes, ok?).
There are so many languages spoken here I can't even name them all off the top of my head. But French and (more often) Wolof are the official languages. I'm pretty good with French, and Wolof is supposedly a much easier language than Pulaar. But as luck would have it, the Pulaars are my people.
So yeah, Pulaar is allegedly more difficult than Wolof. But I'm pretty much guaranteed to struggle with whatever language you give me, given that I'm linguistically retarded.
I'm grateful I was given Pulaar though, because (for whatever reason) it seems to endear me to random people. Even non-Pulaars! I don't get it, but the fact that I can entertain them (what else could it be?) with a few minutes of Pulaar makes me an instant hit with people who, like myself, have a rudimentary understanding of the language.
So, sure, Wolof would get me much farther. I'll tell you what though, I'm a helluva lot more likable for speaking Pulaar. And that's what counts, right?
